UPDATE ONE: Sony have officially revealed three new smartphones today – the Xperia XA2, Xperia XA2 Ultra and Xperia L2 – as CES 2018 is about to kick off.
The new range of smartphones boast thinner bezels on the side, with the Sony Xperia Twitter describing the new design as “borderless beauty”.
The Sony Xperia XA2 boasts a 23MP rear camera and a 8MP front facing camera for selfies.
While Sony described the Xperia XA2 Ultra as the “dual selfie” smartphone thanks to its 16MP two front facing camera setup.
Elsewhere, the Xperia LA features a 5.5inch HD display and a 120 degree angled 8MP selfie camera.
As expected, the rumoured Sony Xperia XZ1 Premium and XZ2 – which leaks suggest could have a huge screen and much thinner bezels – were not revealed.
Hideyuki Furumi, EVP, Global Sales & Marketing, at Sony Mobile Communications, said: “Our super mid-range product strategy started out as an exciting new idea based on bringing bold technologies to this section of the market in the most accessible way possible.
“Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra are no different, with leading front camera technology first seen in our flagship XZ line. We’re targeting 2018 as a breakthrough year, and look forward to showcasing further innovations across the entire Xperia portfolio over the coming months.”
ORIGINAL: Sony will be one of the major attractions at CES 2018, with the huge name in tech set to unveil some new Xperia smartphones at the event in Las Vegas.
Sony will be holding their CES 2018 press event at 5pm PST on Monday January 8, which is 1am GMT on Tuesday in the UK.
CEO Kaz Hirai will take to the stage at CES 2018 to “unveil a new generation of Sony innovations” at the first big tech event of the year.
And rumours have been swirling around that Xperia fans will get their first official look at a whole range of new smartphones.
Reliable tech tipster Evan Blass last week said Sony could reveal three updates to its low-to-middle range lines at CES 2018.
These phones are the Xperia XA, XA Ultra and the L.
Writing for VentureBeat, Blass also revealed official alleged renders of the Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2.
This quartet of Sony Xperia phones are expected to be launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February in Barcelona, according to Blass.
And these aren’t the only Sony Xperia phones rumoured to be skipping CES 2018 in favour of MWC 2018.
Phone Arena reported that the Sony Xperia XZ1 Premium, XZ1 Plus and Xperia XZ1 will be unveiled to the public at MWC next month.
These are all upgrades to Sony’s high-end handsets of 2017.
The Xperia XZ1 Premium is rumoured to boast a 5.5inch 4K screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
The upcoming handset will also reportedly boast a 12MP dual camera set-up and a rear fingerprint scanner.
Anticipation has been high for Sony’s next flagship smartphone after alleged leaked renders emerged showing two Xperia phones with much thinner bezels.
Sony Xperia phones are known for their chunky bezels on the top and bottom of the device, as well as bezels on the side that are much thicker than rival phones.
But the leaked pictures show a radical design change, with the side bezels virtually non-existent and the bezels at the top and bottom much thinner.
It’s been claimed that these renders could be of the Xperia XZ1 Premium or the rumoured Xperia XZ2.
The leaked picture shows two Sony devices with thin bezels – one sporting a more rectangular and one with curved edges.
So it is possible these leaked pictures show both the Xperia XZ1 Premium and the Xperia XZ2.
If that’s the case, then Sony Xperia fans are set for a bumper 2018 in which the Japanese tech giant radical shapes up their design decisions.
